Week 19: Skirt #1
Material used: Polyester
1. How well did it work as a garment?
I would give the garment 6 out of 10. As I am not very confident with making clothes, for my first attempt I wanted to make something simple. I wanted to make a pumpkin skirt. I think the skirt I made was quite cute, but it could have made better.
2. Is it fashion? If so why, if not why not?
I don’t think that the skirt was really ‘Fashion’ because it wasn’t very exciting; I didn’t really experiment with the skirt. I think the skirt was more practical and comfortable than fashion.
3. What opening did you use?
I used elastic around the waist.
4. What were the problems?
The problem that I had was measuring the fabric properly, because when it came to sewing the skirt together one side was longer than the other.
5. What could you do to improve next time?
To improve next time I would measure out the material better, making it even.
6. What was the fabric?
The material that I used for skirt #1 was a very nice polyester.
7. How much did you use?
I only used half the fabric as I was making a short skirt.
8. How much did it cost?
The material cost £6 per metre.
9. Where was it sourced?
Shepherd bush.
..................................................................................................................................................................
I measured around my waist and then doubled that number. I folded the fabric in half, and then measured out that amount out of the fabric. To keep the material straight I pinned it to keep it sturdy and then cut off the access material.
When folding the material I didn’t fold the material evenly; the top layer of the skirt was shorter than the bottom layer. I then drew a straight line along the top with chalk.
I then sewed along the line and then turned the material inside out.
I then sewed the two edges together so the front layer folded under. I then attached a safety pin on the end of some elastic. Before this I measured the elastic around my waist to get the right stretch.
I then fed the elastic through the top gap I had sewn.
I found this image of a bubble skirt by Fendi. I really liked it, as this is what I was trying to achieve with my skirt.
